About Jacob Fork Outdoor Center

Southwest of Hickory the land tilts up toward the South Mountains, and that is where a cold rain makes up its mind to be snow. Jacob Fork Outdoor Center meets it on the way in — plowing driveways and access roads, clearing the walks by hand, working ice melt into the grades that hold shade all day. Catawba County storms often begin as slush and finish as glass, so timing beats brute force nearly every time. A long private road cut open at dusk, banks squared off and gravel showing through, means whoever lives at the end of it is not stuck. That is worth going out in the dark for.
