Haw River wakes slowly in summer, mist lifting off the rock shoals while the old mill windows take the first light. T&K Lawn Services works the mill-village blocks and the newer streets running out toward the county road, mowing, trimming, and cutting an edge so clean the red clay stops at the line and the grass takes over. There is a plain kind of satisfaction in a Piedmont yard in July — the passes laid straight, the clippings blown off the walk, the whole lot looking like somebody meant it. Fall brings the leaves down off the willow oaks in one long week, and the work turns to clearing them before they mat into the fescue. Then comes the rare January morning when the Piedmont goes white and the whole county holds still, and the same trucks are out early opening driveways and walks so the day can start on time.
