Waltham Gardens

About Waltham Gardens

The soil around Goldsboro is sandy loam — the kind that grows cucumbers by the truckload down toward Mount Olive, and will grow a fine yard for anyone willing to work with it. Waltham Gardens takes the lawn and the garden beds as one job: mowing and edging on schedule, beds turned, weeded, mulched and shaped until they hold a true line. Planting weather here runs long and generous, right up until the first frost surprises everybody in November. Then it becomes cleanup — leaves off, perennials cut back, the whole yard closed out neat for the cold months. Gardens are patient work, and the payoff arrives on its own schedule, which is half the pleasure.
