By three o'clock on an August afternoon the thunder is usually stacking up somewhere over Elk Mountain, and everyone working outside in Flat Creek keeps one eye on it. The trick is finishing the cut clean before the rain comes down the hollow — mow, trim the fence lines, edge the drive, sweep the clippings back into the turf. Ground here is mountain ground: red clay under thin topsoil, mossy on the north side of the house, thick and green where the sun swings around. This crew keeps yards on a schedule through the growing months and comes back for the leaf work once the poplars turn. There is a real satisfaction in a lawn that looks finished ten minutes before the first drops hit the porch roof.
