Heart and Soil

About Heart and Soil

Spring arrives late in these mountains, and the low ground near the Little River greens weeks before the shaded coves do. Heart and Soil starts the year there, waking the lawns with the first cuts, clearing winter's litter off the turf, and recutting the bed lines back to true. DuPont State Recreational Forest holds the eastern horizon in dark hemlock and pine, and the yards below it come on fast once the sun clears the ridgeline. Summer is steady mowing and close trimming around stone, root and post; autumn is leaves, again and again, until the grass is bare and breathing. Ground tended honestly gives it back.
