Danbury sits low along the Dan with the Sauratown ridges standing over it, and in winter the snow keeps its grip up on the rock long after the bottomland has gone back to brown. It is a small county seat of steep gravel drives, shaded lanes and roads that wind rather than run, country that makes two inches feel like more. Dan River Company clears it — driveways and lots plowed, walkways and steps opened by hand, and ice treated at the bottom of a pitch where a car needs traction most. Getting up a drive on the first try is what the whole cold morning is for. Later, when the sun finally clears the ridge and the icicles begin letting go, the work is already behind you.
