Croatan is longleaf pine and salt air — the national forest on one side, Bogue Sound near enough to change the wind, and summers that grow grass with real enthusiasm. Croatan Wood Company handles both ends of the Carteret County year: mowing, trimming and edging through the long green months, then clearing drives and walks and treating ice on the handful of mornings when the coast freezes hard. Winter storms here are mostly wind and rain, but when sleet does come in off the water it glazes everything at once and nothing moves until somebody scrapes it. A cut yard under coastal pines, needles blown off the walk, holds its lines a good long while. That is the work, both seasons of it.
