About JONNEY'S SERVICE'S

By late August the crape myrtles along Cherryville's side streets are heavy with bloom and dropping petals over everything, and the shadows run long and cool by five. JONNEY'S SERVICE'S is out in that hour, mowing, trimming around dogwood trunks and porch steps, clearing petals and clippings off the walk. Late-summer lawns want a lighter hand — cut a little higher, hold the moisture, let the roots hang on until the fall rains arrive. The result is a yard that stays green when the ditch banks have gone brown. Small attention, repeated, is what carries a lawn through a Carolina August.
