October is the month a Cary lawn gets its second chance, when the heat finally breaks over Swift Creek and the tall fescue is ready to be woken up. A1 Aeration works the Piedmont's red clay the way that clay asks to be worked — opened up, fed, and given seed while the soil is still warm and the nights have cooled. Core plugs scatter across the yard like a handwriting only lawns can read, and by late November the thin ground along the driveway has closed over. Between those big fall weeks there is mowing, edging and blowing to keep on schedule, fertilization and weed control to time right, and leaves to clear before they mat down. The reward is plain and worth the early starts: a yard near Hemlock Bluffs that holds its color after the rest of the block has gone dormant.
