Three in the morning under Howard's Knob, and the wind is doing what northwest wind does to Boone: moving snow sideways for hours after the sky has technically stopped. Appalachian Maintenance runs those hours, plowing lots and driveways, opening walkways, and treating ice where the wind has scoured a drive down to a polished skin. High Country snow is not one storm so much as a shift in the weather, and a lane cleared at midnight can want it again by five. The payoff is a town that wakes to open pavement and hardly notices what it took to get there. Out toward Deep Gap and Vilas the drifts come back, and so does the plow.
