Grass grows long and fast beside brackish water, and a Beaufort County summer keeps it coming from April clear into October. Slade Landscaping mows, edges and trims lawns that run down toward Back Creek and the wide Pamlico, feeding and seeding them, keeping beds mulched and the leaf fall carried off once the water turns steel-colored. A shoreline yard cut clean has a look all its own, the line of the mower and the line of the marsh and the line of the far bank all in a row. Winter is short here, but the odd hard freeze glazes driveways and porch steps overnight, and those get plowed, shoveled and salted the same morning they arrive. Between the two, the place stays trimmed, walkable and ready for whatever the river weather decides.
