Winter comes gently to Bath most years: grey water, bare cypress, and a wind off the Pamlico that means it. Then once in a while the whole town wakes up silvered, the marsh grass stiff, the docks glazed, and everything stops. Garden classics is out on those mornings, clearing driveways and walkways along Bath Creek and scraping and salting the paths and steps that a coastal freeze turns treacherous in a few hours. Because ice here is rare, it is also unpractised, and someone arriving with a plow and a bag of de-icer is the difference between a lost day and a normal one. By the time the sun reaches the live oaks and the glaze starts letting go overhead, people have already been coming and going for hours.
