There is a line on the climb toward Balsam where rain quits and snow begins, and it moves up and down the mountain all winter long. High Country Landscapes works both sides of it out of Barkers Creek, plowing and shoveling for houses that may get four inches while a neighbor two hundred feet lower gets slush. Sleet is the hard one, because it packs and then glazes, and it takes de-icer and patience rather than horsepower. The measure of a good morning is a driveway scraped to bare surface and banked square, with the walk beside it salted end to end. Storms come stacked here, one behind another, and each is met the same way.
