Down in Pamlico County the Neuse has gone so wide it behaves like a bay, and a hard northwest wind in January pushes the water out of the creeks and leaves the marsh grass rimed with frost. Snow here is rare enough to be talked about for years, but a freeze that catches wet pavement is not, and a boat ramp or a shop lot can turn slick before anybody is awake. Neuse River Turf Farm covers that work around Arapahoe: plowing and clearing lots and drives, shoveling walks, and treating the icy patches that sit in the shade all day. A cleared apron on a cold, blue-sky morning, with the river flat and glittering past it, is a fine thing to stand and look at. When the weather turns, the run goes out toward Oriental, Bayboro and Minnesott Beach.
