On the east side of the Bitterroot Valley, where ranch fences run straight toward the Sapphire foothills, wind can pile a foot of snow into a drift overnight and leave the next field bare. Northern Edge Land Management reads those drifts the way a rancher reads weather, plowing long driveways and access lanes so trucks and buses can get through before the wind changes its mind again. Victor sits low in the valley, and the cold lingers here even when the mountains above are catching sun, so a lane cleared at noon can be half-drifted again by dinner. The crew works methodically, lane by lane, until gravel shows through white and a straight black line runs from the county road to the barn. It's plain work, done in a place where the land still calls most of the shots.
