Downtown Thompson Falls runs in a short row of streets between the highway and the riverbank, close enough to the water that the cold off the Clark Fork collects in the block before it reaches anywhere else in town. Sorlie Excavating works the driveways and lots along that stretch, where a wet snow can turn to a hard crust overnight, thick enough that a shovel barely dents it before a plow blade gets a proper pass at it. Behind downtown, the ground climbs quickly into a fir-covered ridge where storms move through differently, sun breaking the cloud in patches even in January, thinning what falls before it can pack hard. Between the two, the work runs from breaking river-cooled ice at the bottom of the hill to clearing looser snow higher up, sometimes in the same morning. A lot scraped down to bare gravel, with the river sliding past gray and quiet just beyond the last row of buildings, marks a job done right.
