Highway 200 climbs and drops through Thompson Falls along canyon walls thick with ponderosa pine, and the driveways cut into those hillsides don't sit flat the way they might down in an open valley. Pardee Excavating shapes that kind of ground for a living, so clearing a steep, curving driveway in winter is really the same problem worked backward — knowing where the grade wants to shed water, and snow, and where it'll pile up instead. The Cabinet Mountains hold weather in tight around this stretch of river, and a storm can leave six inches on one side of a ridge and barely a dusting on the other. Heavy equipment makes quick work of a long hillside lane, pushing snow clear of the cut bank rather than just piling it back against the hillside where it'll slide again. The pines overhead stay loaded long after the plow moves on, but the ground underneath is bare and solid, which is the half of the job that actually gets a truck up the hill.
