Sidney wakes to the smell of the sugar plant before it wakes to much else in winter, steam rising off the processing buildings while frost sits thick on whatever's left of the fall's beet piles at the edge of town. Franz Construction Inc. runs its plow routes through Richland County in that same early dark, clearing driveways and farm roads that spread out from Sidney toward the Yellowstone River bottomland. Eastern Montana cold arrives dry and hard here, hard enough to keep fresh snow light and powdery rather than packing solid, and a driveway cleared before sunrise tends to stay clear most of the day if the wind stays down. Oil-patch traffic and farm trucks both need those roads open early, so the route runs wide arcs from in-town streets out to the section roads before most of Sidney has its lights on. By the time the plant's steam is visible against full daylight, the morning's routes are finished and the roads into town are running clear.
