The Musselshell River takes its time through Shawmut, looping past cottonwoods and hay meadows in a wide Wheatland County valley. The old Milwaukee Road grade still traces the bottomland, and on a late-June afternoon the air hums with grasshoppers and smells of cut hay and sage. fieldandlotmowing is exactly what its name sounds like: mowing for fields, lots and yards, plus lawn care, wherever grass grows faster than anyone can keep up. A big open lot mown low and even, edged neatly where it meets the gravel, turns a tangle of seed heads into open, usable ground again. Out here, where the land is generous and the warm months are brief, that is work worth doing well.
