By the time the last skiers roll back down from Red Lodge Mountain and the marquee lights on the old Roman Theatre flick off for the night, Pro Cut is just getting started. Headlights sweep a plow blade back and forth across downtown lots while the Beartooths disappear into full dark behind town, and one lot after another gets pushed clear before the breakfast crowd shows up at the diners. There's a particular hush to Carbon County after 11 p.m. in a storm, broken mostly by the scrape of steel on pavement and an idling engine cooling in the cold. Walks get shoveled down to bare concrete, salt goes down wherever ice is likely to form by morning, and the piled snow gets hauled off before it crowds the curb any further. It's steady work timed to a ski town's late hours rather than a nine-to-five clock.
