Spring reaches the Jocko Valley in stages — the river ice lets go first, then the willows around Arlee turn a bright greenish yellow, and one week the whole valley floor is green at once. Blue Ridge Landscape works through that turn on the Flathead Reservation, mowing, trimming and shaping the ground around homes so a yard keeps pace with the country holding it. Landscaping here means reading a place that is half meadow already: what to keep low, what to let stand, where a bed belongs against a wall of blue ridgeline. The mowers run all summer, and come October the same yards get cut back and cleared out. There is real satisfaction in stepping off a lawn at the end of a day and seeing it lie flat and even in the long light.
