Driveways along the bluffs above the confluence get plowed and sanded, and parking areas at the shops nearby get cleared wide. Walkways down toward the river get shoveled so the ice underfoot doesn't catch anyone off guard, and snow gets pushed well back from the bluff edges before spring runoff can carry it into the water below. The two rivers keep moving under their own skin of frost long after the yards above them are clear, holding the cold longer than the rest of the valley does.
