The Clark Fork runs straight through the middle of town, and everything green in Missoula is downstream of it one way or another. Clark Fork Maintenance takes its name from that water and its calendar from the cottonwoods along the Kim Williams Trail, which leaf out in May and then let go all at once in October. Between those two events there is mowing to keep up with, trimming and edging, fertilizing, and aeration for ground that packs hard by midsummer. When the leaves finally come down they come down in one thick week, and the rakes and blowers earn their keep. A lawn beside this river ought to look like it belongs to the valley rather than argue with it.
