At the confluence where the Tongue River gives itself over to the Yellowstone just outside Miles City, the floodplain holds deer and pheasant through the winter months, tracks crossing the cleared ground before the morning's even fully light. Yellowstone Environmental Contracting works the driveways and rural approaches along that bottomland, where cottonwood roots buckle the gravel and a plowed lane has to bend around ground that floods every spring and freezes every winter. The two rivers together carry more cold air than either does alone, banking it low along the bottom while the bluffs above stay a few degrees warmer in the same hour. The work stays quiet and early along a stretch of ground shaped as much by the rivers as by anything built on it.
