On the south side of Miles City, where newer construction has spread out along the highway bypass, the ground is flatter and more exposed than the older blocks closer to the river. Schaefer Excavating clears the commercial lots and building approaches in that newer stretch of town, pushing snow off freshly graded ground that doesn't yet have the windbreaks older properties nearby already have. A Canadian cold front can drop temperatures thirty degrees in an afternoon out here, turning a wet lot to a sheet of ice by the time the sun's down, so timing a run against the forecast matters as much as the plow work itself. The ground is newer, but the wind is the same one the ranches outside town deal with, just paved over now.
