Miles City's Riverside Park and the walking paths along the Yellowstone hold onto winter longer than the streets a few blocks up, shaded by cottonwoods and slower to catch what sun the short days offer. Northern Landscape clears driveways and walkways on residential properties near the park and the WaterWorks grounds, working the kind of shaded, low-lying yards that stay icy after the open lots downtown have already dried bare. The Yellowstone itself runs low and slow through town in deep winter, sometimes rimmed with ice at the edges, and the cold that sits over the water seems to reach the yards closest to it. The jobs stay small and residential — a walkway here, a driveway there — timed to a stretch of town that holds its cold a little longer than the rest.
