The land south and east of Miles City breaks into badlands country before long — sandstone rims and dry coulees that catch and hold snow long after the flat ground has blown clear. A hard freeze holds fast in the coulee bottoms out here, even while wind keeps the ridges above them blown bare, so a driveway can need clearing in one spot and be fine ten yards on. Miles City's grain elevators are usually the last thing visible in the rearview before the badlands close in around the road, and the last thing visible again on the way back into town.
