Lolo Creek comes down off the pass and meets the Bitterroot River right at the edge of town, and the cold air pools in that low ground and lingers long after the sun's up over the ridgeline. Lolo Creek Excavating, LLC plows the driveways and lanes strung along the creek bottom and the benches above it, where a hard freeze can leave black ice on a shaded stretch of gravel for a week straight. This is the same ground Lewis and Clark's party crossed on their way toward the pass, and the creek still runs the same course through the same narrow bottom, slower under a lid of shelf ice by December. A driveway cleared down to gravel here holds its edge only until the creek fog climbs back up the draw the next morning, so the crew tends to double back before noon.
