Dawn comes late to Lolo in winter, held back by the wall of the Bitterroot Mountains standing steep and white just west of the valley floor. Elkhorn Excavating clears the driveways and gravel approaches strung along the benches above Lolo Creek, working while frost still rimes the ponderosa needles overhead. This is elk-wintering ground as much as anyone's — herds move down into these foothills through the cold months — and a plowed lane here often shares its own tracks with theirs by the time the truck comes back through. The valley bottom holds fog and cold air long after the peaks have gone gold with morning light, so the work starts early and follows the sun's slow climb over the ridge.
