The cottonwoods along the Yellowstone river bottom turn all at once in October, and for about ten days Livingston is lit from underneath. Then the wind takes the whole canopy down in an afternoon, which is roughly when this crew earns its full name. Tree work comes first, deadwood out and limbs pulled back off roofs and lines before the weight of wet snow finds them. Lawns get their last cut and a thorough leaf clearing, beds raked out, gutters' worth of debris hauled away. After that the shovels and the plow take over, drives and walks opened early so nobody starts the day fighting a berm. Trees, grass and snow are three jobs to most people and one long conversation with the same yard here.
