Laurel wakes to the hum of the rail yard and the far-off glow of refinery stacks long before the sun clears the Clarks Fork bottoms. When a hard freeze locks down the streets north of the tracks, Junk Monsters is out working the grid of alleys and driveways before the day shift changes over. A Laurel winter morning carries a particular kind of quiet, just the idle of a plow truck and packed snow giving way to bare pavement, and getting a driveway open before someone has to leave for the yard or the plant is the whole point. Sidewalks get shoveled down to concrete, salt goes down at the curb cuts, and the piles get hauled off rather than left to melt into ice later in the week. It's plain work done early, so the rest of Laurel can get moving on schedule.
