In August of 1805, Meriwether Lewis followed Horse Prairie Creek west toward Lemhi Pass, where the waters part between two oceans. The valley remains broad and lightly settled, with sage on the benches, hay meadows along the creek and the Beaverhead Mountains standing guard on the western skyline.
