Big Sky Ice Control watches for exactly that — the black ice that forms after a daytime thaw refreezes overnight, the shaded corners near downtown buildings that never quite catch direct sun in January. Beyond de-icing, the crew plows driveways and walkways across town, working streets that run from the flat valley floor out to the steeper grades below the hillside neighborhoods. Winter here is less about deep snow some years and more about that thin, sneaky glaze that forms and reforms with every freeze-thaw cycle. A treated sidewalk or a sanded driveway ramp makes the difference between a normal Tuesday and a bad fall, and that's the work this crew does block by block.
