The foothills toward Rocky Boy hold a different kind of light in the late afternoon, the low winter sun turning drifted snow gold along the ridgelines above Havre. Tom Patrick Construction works through that light and past it, plowing driveways and lots on farm-to-market roads where a single truck with a blade can be the only thing keeping a place accessible. Fence posts along those roads wear a crust of rime by midwinter, marking miles that would otherwise blur together under snow. It's slower work than summer construction, more patience than speed, one driveway and one stretch of road at a time. The ridgelines go purple as the light fails, and the routes worked that day stay open, snow pushed back cleanly along the shoulders long after the truck has moved on to the next one.
