Freight cars idle along the Burlington Northern tracks that split Glendive in two, and long before most of town is awake, Gramm Construction has equipment out clearing the lots and lanes that keep the working side of the city moving. This is heavy ground — wide alleys, gravel yards, the kind of surface that takes a loader rather than a shovel — and a hard freeze off the plains can lock a lot solid overnight. The crew pushes snow back from loading areas and access roads so trucks can move at first light. Out past the rail yard, the badlands hold their color even under snow, rust-colored rims dusted white against a flat gray sky. It's early, unglamorous work, done so the rest of Glendive can get where it's going.
