On the edge of town, in the newer steel-sided plant that processes what comes off the surrounding hemp fields each fall, IND HEMP's yard runs on truck schedules that don't pause for weather — the work doesn't stop because the lot's under four inches of new snow. Clearing that yard and the loading dock aprons before the first truck of the day arrives is its own kind of race against the plant's own clock, done in the dark, under yard lights, well before the sky over the Missouri breaks even starts to gray. The wind that comes off the open ground east of Fort Benton can drift a cleared lot half shut again by the time the second shift needs it, so the work sometimes runs twice in a day rather than once. It's industrial-scale winter work, matched to a facility that keeps moving on its own schedule regardless of the weather outside its fence. A clear apron at 5 a.m. is what keeps that whole schedule from backing up.
