Steamboats once tied up along Fort Benton's levee at the head of navigation on the Missouri, and the town still carries that river history with pride. In winter the levee walk goes white, the old walking bridge stands dark against the ice, and the bronze statue of Shep keeps his long vigil over a hushed Front Street. Casey's Excavation, an excavation outfit, turns its hand to snow removal when storms blow in off the high plains. The goal is simple: driveways and lots opened in the dark before town stirs, the banks pushed back neat and square. In the birthplace of Montana, a cleared path to the street still matters.
