Along the west shore near Elmo and Big Arm, Flathead Lake throws its own weather at the reservation — a clear morning can turn into a squall line off the water by noon, dropping snow in bands that miss one driveway and bury the next. Snow Slingers LLC works that shoreline stretch on the terms the lake sets, watching which way the water's holding its heat and getting a blade out before a band comes ashore. Cherry orchards climb the benches above the lake here, dormant and snow-dusted through the winter, and the same narrow lake-road driveways that serve them in summer need clearing all winter long. There's a particular read to lake-effect snow — it comes fast and it's local — and getting a driveway open before the next band rolls through off the water is the whole job. A crew here learns to change its route twice in one morning, because the lake already changed its mind once.
