Out around Charlo the land flattens into the Ninepipe country, potholes and sloughs that fill with ducks and geese come spring but sit locked under snow and ice most of the winter, ringed by working ranches that need their lanes open every day, storm or not. Pauly Transport & Tractor runs the equipment that country calls for — clearing long approaches and yard sets so feed trucks and stock trailers can move before first light. A tractor built for haying in July does the same work in January, blade down, moving snow off ground it knows in every other season. The valley's ranches don't stop for weather, and a lane left drifted shut by mid-morning is a problem that costs more than the snow itself. Out here the tractor never really goes back in the shed, and clearing a lane is just one more pass it makes before dark.
