Cattle still winter on the open ground around Deer Lodge the way they have since the valley's ranching days built the town, and the wind that pushes across those pastures doesn't slow down for a fence line or a subdivision street. Ward Industries clears both kinds of ground, ranch lanes wide enough for a feed truck and in-town driveways barely wide enough for a sedan, and the difference in scale is mostly a matter of which blade goes on the truck. A hard wind out of the north can drift a lane shut within an hour of it being cleared, so this crew builds a second pass into the plan rather than treating one pass as the finish line. The valley holds cold air like a bowl, and mornings here can read ten degrees colder than the benches just above it — ice forms fast and holds hard once it does.
