The Clark Fork runs the length of the Deer Lodge Valley, and the ground on either side of it is the same ground M&P Excavating has moved for other jobs — river-bottom soil that freezes hard enough by December to hold a loader's weight without complaint. That's useful, because a heavy snowfall here doesn't just need a blade, it sometimes needs the same equipment that digs a foundation, pushing drift back off a commercial lot or a long ranch approach in a single pass. Afternoons in the valley carry a particular flat, gray light in midwinter, mountains on both sides blurred by whatever's still falling, and this crew reads that light as well as it reads soil. A cleared lot here stays cleared because the snow gets hauled off, not just piled at the edge to melt into the next thaw and refreeze.
