Where the Stillwater River empties into the Yellowstone, the cold settles differently than it does out on the open bench — the water keeps moving even when everything around it locks up, and fog off that current can frost a windshield an hour after the sky's gone clear. Stillwater Excavating works the ground on both sides of that confluence, and the equipment built for turning river-bottom soil in July gets fitted with a blade for turning snowbanks in December. A cul-de-sac off Main Street, a ranch lane out toward the mine road — each gets cleared to the same standard, gravel showing, edges square. There's a rhythm to it: out before the school buses, back out if the wind refills what was already cleared. By the time the sandstone bluffs catch full light, the routes are done.
