Chinook takes its name from the warm wind that can strip a foot of snow off the Hi-Line in a single afternoon, but between those thaws the town sees plenty of the ordinary kind of winter too, drifts building against fence lines out where the wheat stubble meets the base of the Bear Paw Mountains. Kingdom Craftsman LLC works the driveways and yards along the Milk River valley and the streets of town itself, clearing snow that the open prairie wind has usually packed harder than it fell. There isn't much to hide behind out here — no canyon walls, no forest, just flat country and a big sky that makes a plow truck's headlights visible from a long way off before dawn. The work follows the wind as much as the snow, since a clear driveway one evening can drift shut again by morning if the Hi-Line gets moving. When the chinook finally does come through, what's left uncovered by the wind is left clean by hand.
