Butte sits close to a mile above sea level, high enough that wind off the Continental Divide can turn a routine snowfall into something a lot harder to move, packed down and refrozen before a single truck gets to it. West Repairs runs its winter routes on the west side of town, below the ridge where Our Lady of the Rockies looks out over the whole valley, working driveways and streets that catch that same wind straight on. There's no easy shortcut to it — snow up here doesn't melt off fast even on a sunny day, so a driveway cleared today can still need attention again by the weekend if the wind has its way. The job is steady, repetitive work: plow, scrape, haul, repeat, until the block is passable and stays that way through whatever the Divide sends next. By the time spring finally breaks the pattern, the west side has stayed open through all of it.
