The old boulevards of West Broadway were laid out by people who expected them to be kept — narrow green strips between the sidewalk and the street, running past mansions and brick apartment houses toward the hill. Hometown Landscape Architecture treats those strips with the seriousness they were built with: mowing them even, trimming around every hydrant, tree well and lamp post, and edging both sides so the green sits like a ribbon between two clean lines. In June the yards along these blocks are as good as Butte gets, and a careful cut is what shows them off. The clippings come up off the walk before the crew moves on, since the finish is the part people see from the street. It's neighborhood upkeep in the truest sense, one block at a time.
