In late fall the elk come down out of the timber above Bridger Canyon Road and stand in the hayfields at first light, breath showing. Elk Grove Lawn Service works those same cold mornings — final mows taken while frost is still white on the north sides of yards, leaves cleared, aeration and seed put down so the roots can set before the ground locks up. Bozeman winters are long and hard on turf, and what goes into a lawn in October decides how it looks in May. Then the mowing rotation, trimming and feeding carry through the warm months on the other side. Yards are kept in Bozeman, up the canyon and out toward Belgrade.
