Black Eagle wakes to the Missouri working its way over the dam, and on a June morning the sound carries up the bank before the sun has cleared the water. That is Dusty's Sprinklers' hour — heads popping up one zone at a time, each arc checked so the water lands on grass instead of sidewalk. Summers on this stretch of river run hot and bright and dry enough to pull the color out of a yard in a single week, so the work here is mostly water: irrigation lines laid true, valves and heads repaired, timers set for the cool end of the day, and every system blown clear in fall before the ground locks up. Mowing, trimming and edging finish what the water begins. There is a plain kind of pride in a lawn that stays deep green in a town this windy, and it is the whole point of the trade.
