About Billings Lawn & Snow Service

Winter comes into this township on a north wind, through the pines and the bare oaks, and it settles deepest on the two-tracks and lake roads where nobody plows but the people who live there. Billings Lawn & Snow Service runs those routes — long drives back through the trees, turnarounds by the cottages, the wall the county plow throws across the end of an approach. The truck goes out at strange hours because that is when it matters. There is something plainly good about a black, open driveway in a landscape that is otherwise entirely white. Come the thaw the same roads turn to mud, and everybody starts waiting on green.
