Head south out of Bigfork on the road toward Swan Lake and the houses start to look like they grew out of the timber around them: hewn log walls, deep porches, driveways cut between stands of tamarack that go gold in October and bare by December. D & S Logworks builds in that country, and when the snow comes to stay, the same trucks that haul logs turn to clearing the long gravel driveways that wind back into the trees. These are not village lots; they are lanes that curve half a mile through the woods before they reach a road anyone plows on schedule, so getting them open after a storm is its own kind of craft. A driveway cut clean between dark timber and white snow is a small, specific pleasure, the kind that only shows up once the plow blade has passed. Out here along the Swan Lake road, winter access is not a convenience, it is the difference between a house you can get to and one you cannot.
