Wind is the first thing anyone learns in Big Timber. It comes down off the Crazies before breakfast, combs the grass flat along the Boulder River, and by mid-morning it has dried every blade standing between the highway and the cottonwoods. Down To Earth Landscape works with that clock rather than against it: mowing while the ground is still cool, trimming close around fence lines and foundations, then cutting the edge along a walk so clean it holds a shadow at noon. Out here a lawn is a small green argument with high plains country, and it deserves to be kept honestly — raked out in spring, tidied again when the leaves let go, kept even all the weeks between. There is a real satisfaction in the last pass of the day, when the stripes run straight toward the Yellowstone and the yard looks like somebody meant it.
